Vegetable Growing Tips For Everyone
By: Deena Leane Kevins
Today dietitians and other health specialists have been stressing more than ever the importance of consuming vegetables in a healthy diet. However, many people hold that vegetables cultivated with the aid of chemicals and pesticides could have the opposite affect on health. The obvious answer to how to find fresh vegetables that satisfy all health criteria is to grow your own. It is good to note that growing vegetables is also not restricted to people who own gardens or have access to them since you can grow a variety of vegetables in containers on your balcony or patio.
If you are interested in starting your own vegetable garden the first place to start is to gather information on the best vegetables that grow in your soil conditions and climate. You can find an abundance of material on vegetable growing in your local library and there is also a great deal of information available on the Internet. Another excellent resource for information is your local garden center and you are almost sure to have friends and neighbors who are growing vegetables for years and can supply you with useful tips. The kind of vegetables you family enjoy eating, and the savings in money by growing yourself the more expensive vegetables are also common considerations in determining which vegetables to plant.
A few simple tips to follow:
As a rule growing vegetables requires a large amount of sunshine and so a prime requirement in determining a location for your vegetable garden is the amount of sunlight. At the opposite end of the extreme, if you live in a cold climate you should consider how to protect your plants from exposure to the cold weather, especially from frost. For instance you might want to lay down plastic sheeting that protects the seedlings against the cold while at the same time it does not deny them the sunshine they need for healthy growth.
You also need to make sure that the seedlings receive an efficient amount of water while at the same time avoid drowning them with over-watering. Thus if you are growing vegetables in a container you should make sure that you choose one with holes to allow surplus water to run out.
In addition to watering the plants, the use of natural composts also helps improve plant growth. It is easy to make you own composts from decayed food, leaves and other similar materials. Excellent results can be achieved while at the same time you make a valuable environmental contribution by recycling household waste.
