Saving Money and Finding a Satisfying Hobby - Growing Your Own Vegetables

By: Deena Leane Kevins

If you have ever been frustrated by the quality and the prices of the vegetables on offer at the local supermarket, maybe the thought of growing your own vegetables has entered your mind? Even if you have a good range of vegetables at fair prices locally available, the increasing concern over the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers gives sufficient ground for many people to opt for growing their own vegetables. Creating your own vegetable patch does not involve a tremendous amount of effort and in addition to enjoying a supply of fresh vegetables you also gain a relaxing hobby. Even if you happen to live on an upper floor of an apartment building you can still grow a range of vegetables in containers on your balcony or patio and so this is a hobby that everyone can enjoy.

Like most things in life vegetable growing benefits from forward planning. To decide the best vegetables to grow you need to first of all consider which vegetables that you and your family enjoy and the costs and availability of these vegetables. For example, if you live in Northern Europe where potatoes are abundant and one of the lowest cost foods, it is probably not worth your while to try and grow them in your own vegetable plot. A much better idea is to select to grow one of the less abundantly available and hence more expensive vegetables such as chili peppers.

Once you have decided the kind of vegetables that you are interested in growing, you need to take into account the climate and soil conditions in your area and decide how practical it is going to be to grow them. Thus is you have decided to grow a vegetable that originates from a tropical climate and you live in a cold climate, consider how you are going to make sure the seedlings receive the amount of sunshine they need? Is there a suitable corner of your patio where these plants are going to be exposed to the heat they require, or better still have you got the option of growing vegetables in a greenhouse?

Even if you do not have any open area in your apartment you are still not excluded from the ranks of vegetable growers. Mushrooms are an excellent choice for growing indoors and are a popular ingredient in salads. Growing mushrooms indoors actually has advantages over growing them outdoors in terms of protection from insect infestation and diseases.

Childhood memories come flooding back with the taste of a freshly picked tomato, and not the bland mass produced and irradiated supermarket variety. Sure our supermarkets can provide plenty of out of season items, in a gardeners opinion no thanks I will wait for my own.
