Growing Peppers For Fun and For Self Consumption!
By: Deena Leane Kevins
Over the last few decades a growing awareness of the health value of eating fresh peppers has developed, and since they are an easy plant to grow it is not hard to understand how they have become a popular choice for growing in vegetable patches, and they are also very suitable for planting in indoor containers.
Actually, if you are interested in growing vegetables you have a huge number of types to choose from. According to some estimates an amazing 2,500 new pepper species are being created each year and so you are sure to be able to find a pepper that meets your taste and is suitable for cultivating in your locality.
Unless you have made an in-depth study of all the varieties of peppers available - and this could be quite an interesting and rewarding exercise if you have the time to spare - the best place to head to is a garden center where you can benefit from their expert knowledge in this field.
So which peppers are popular amongst growers?
Habanero peppers are orange or red colored peppers that are known as very hot peppers. If you are interested in cooking highly spiced foods this type of pepper might be a good choice but remember to use only small doses. If you are interested in a pepper that is slightly less hot but still one of the peppers with the strongest of tastes, the well known cayenne pepper might be the answer. On the other hand, if a sweeter pepper more appeals to your taste why not try growing ball peppers? These are known for being particularly easy to grown and are hence a recommended choice for those who are thinking of starting growing peppers. They are also ideal for use in salads.
Tips on growing peppers:
After you have decided which kind of peppers you are going to enjoy eating, you need to find out which are most suitable to grow in your locality and the optimum growing conditions. For example, suppose you have decided that chili peppers are the kind you want to grow, you will learn that they enjoy a great deal of sunlight so you are well advised to place them in a south-facing window or even better in a greenhouse. You are also likely to discover that after the seeds germinate their growth is closed related to the amount of light they enjoy. You can thus encourage their growth by placing a fluorescent tube about 4 or five inches above these seedlings.
