Creating Your Own Little Garden by Growing Vegetables in Containers

By: Deena Leane Kevins

Perhaps you have passed an attractive looking vegetable garden and given a sigh of disappointment that you are not in a position to create a similar garden since you live in an apartment block? The lack of a plot of land need not be an obstacle to having your own vegetable garden; just as flowers can be growing on a window sill in flower pots, people who don't have their own gardens can also easily grow vegetables in containers on their balcony or patio.

A few simple steps to creating an attractive vegetable garden in a container:

If you follow a few basic steps for vegetable cultivation in containers you can enjoy as much success as those who have garden vegetable plots. Your container-based vegetable garden can make an attractive addition to your apartment and at the same time you enjoy a supply of healthy vegetables cultivated without the dangerous chemicals and fertilizers sometimes employed by commercial vegetable growers. An extensive range of vegetables are suitable for growing in containers, including beets, carrots, cabbage and tomatoes to give just a few examples.

Choose the right container and position it wisely:

The choice of container is particularly important. Although most people realize that vegetables need to be watered the issue of drainage is all too easy to forget. You need to select containers with holes that ensure good drainage so that even if you over-water the vegetable plants you are not going to ruin them - they will take the amount of water they need and the remaining water drains away through the holes.

After drainage, positioning is a key consideration. Vegetable containers should ideally be sited in an area where there is a good supply of sunshine. This is one aspect of vegetable cultivation that gives the person using a container an advantage over the grower using a traditional vegetable plot. If the vegetable plot only enjoys sunshine in the morning hours there is nothing you can do about this, but you can move a container from one end of your patio to the other end so that it benefits from both the morning and afternoon sunshine.

Additional vegetable plant care tips:

Another good practice to following when growing vegetables in a container is to remember to place a sufficient amount of mulch on the earth to protect the plant roots from over-exposure to heat and at the same time remember to regularly use fertilizer, preferably a liquid fertilizer, to aid the plants' growth.
